While the 2013 Kentucky Derby did not disappoint as “the most exciting 2 minutes in sports,” this years winner was definitely not a total surprise to horse racing fans. Orb was a 5-1 favorite after a four-race win streak and a strong workout early in the week at Churchill Downs. Again, the successes not surprising considering Orb’s equally impressive team: jockey, Joel Rosario, trainer, Shug McGaughey, and owners, Ogden Phipps and Stuart Janney III. It was the most ideal combination for a winning race, and despite the rainy skies and muddy course, Orb did just that. With a final time of 2:02.89, Orb was crowned the 139th Kentucky Derby! With a relatively even playing field lacking a traditional, overwhelming favorite at the top, the 2012-2013 season has been as unpredictable and exciting as any year in recent memory. Although the Indiana Hoosiers entered the season as the AP preseason #1, and will are expected to be the #1 ranked team entering week 17 after a huge road win over the #4 Michigan State Spartans, it has been a roller coaster of a year to say the least.

Brace yourself; the following is a quick look-in at exactly how up & down this season has really been. The Hoosiers were the #1 team in college basketball until eventually falling to the Butler Bulldogs in week 7 on the road (it was played on a neutral site, but cited as a road game), surrendering the number 1 spot the Duke Blue Devils. Four weeks later, the Blue Devils were beaten, on the road, by North Carolina State, giving up their number 1 spot to the Louisville Cardinals. The next week, the Cardinals fell to Syracuse 70-68 returning the Blue Devils back to #1. The following week (yes, the very next week), Duke was destroyed on the road by Miami 63-90, which put the Michigan Wolverines at the #1 ranked team in college basketball.

Michigan then faced the #3 Indiana Hoosiers, on the road, in what many believed to be a litmus test for the real number 1 team in college basketball. The Hoosiers won in a thriller, 81-73, and have held the #1 rank ever since.

For the time being, the Indiana Hoosiers appear to be the best team in college basketball. Coach Tom Crean has done a remarkable job getting the Hoosiers back to being a title contender, starting with the recruitment of All-American sophomore center Cody Zeller. In such an unpredictable season, however, the only thing we can truly expect this year is madness this upcoming March.

Justin Timberlake is making an emphatic return to the entertainment industry, starting with a remarkable performance Sunday night at the 2013 Grammys. On top his big performance, JT recently released the new album cover for his upcoming album, The 20/20 Experience, which is set to release on March 19^th. The album will be his first LP album since 2006, with 10 new songs on the current track list.

JT has also revealed plans for a potential stadium tour with friend and co-artist Jay-Z. The two are tentatively planning to perform at 11-13 different venues this summer. Although the details are continuing to be discussed, Timberlake was quoted to Rolling Stone on the red carpet as saying, “”We’re definitely going to go on tour . . . I don’t know how much I should say. . . . It’s going to be a lot of fun, I know that”

In the NBA, these adjustments aren’t typically easy. Salary cap limits, restrictive contracts, and team chemistry concerns make trades difficult, meaning teams that are currently fighting for a playoff spot need to make internal changes to try and reach that goal. Regardless of a team’s expectations heading into the season, a current evaluation of their existing status will determine what moves need to be made as the trade deadline approaches.

Let’s take a look at five teams that, whether for better or worse, have had surprising seasons thus far.

Boston Celtics

After losing to the Miami Heat in seven games in the Eastern Conference Finals last year, many anticipated a full rebuilding process in the summer of 2012 for the aging Boston Celtics. GM Danny Ainge went in the complete opposite direction, signing guards Courtney Lee and Jason Terry to replace Ray Allen, along with resigning forwards Kevin Garnett and Jeff Green. The Celtics, on paper, had upgraded at multiple positions and seemed poised to compete for a title for at least one more year. Unfortunately, a slow start combined with an ACL injury to star point guard Rajon Rondo has the Celtics currently sitting at the seventh seed in the East, with the season all but lost.

Chicago Bulls

When Derrick Rose went down with a torn ACL in the first game of the 2012 post-season, the expectation for the Bulls 2013 season went down with him. Coach Tom Thibodeau had other ideas. This resilient bunch is currently 4^th in the Eastern Conference, winning with team basketball and fundamental defense. The Chicago Bulls are 3^rd in the NBA in points allowed per game at 91.8, a figure that accurately represents the identity of the team thus far. With the expected return of Derrick Rose shortly after the all-star break, it would be a mistake to rule the Bulls out as a serious title contender.

Golden State Warriors

At 30-17, the Golden State Warriors enter the All-Star break as one of the most pleasantly surprising teams in the NBA. Second year coach Mark Jackson has completely turned this team around, in large part due to the health of point guard Stephen Curry. Ranking in the top ten in points, assists, and rebounds per game, the Golden State Warriors continue to hold their ground in the very difficult Western Conference with a high powered offensive attack. All-star David Lee has emerged as one of the best low-post scorers in the league, giving the Warriors an inside scoring presence to go along with their already stellar outside shooting. If both Andrew Bogut and Stephen Curry can stay healthy, which is a major ‘if’, the Golden State Warriors will be nothing short of a tough out in the playoffs.

Los Angeles Lakers

Without a doubt the most surprising team in the league, the Los Angeles Lakers currently sit as the 10^th seed in the Western Conference with a record of 23-27. Off-season acquisitions of future hall-of-famers Dwight Howard and Steve Nash, combined with the existing star power of Kobe Bryant and Pau Gasol, had this 2012-2013 Lakers team as an early favorite to reach the NBA Finals in June. A slow start, combined with a lengthy foot injury to point guard Steve Nash, forced GM Mitch Kupchak to take action, which resulted in the firing of head coach Mike Brown. Many anticipated the Lakers would immediately turn to Phil Jackson to replace Brown, the logical move to turn around the struggling ballclub. Kupchak shockingly decided to sign offensive guru Mike D’Antoni to a 3-year, $12 million dollar deal with a team option for a fourth, hoping D’Antoni could address their offensive identity crisis. The struggles have nonetheless continued, with no solution on the horizon. Pau Gasol recently tore his plantar fascia in his right food, an injury expected to sideline him 6-8 weeks. The problems don’t stop there; all-star center Dwight Howard has a nagging shoulder injury, which at some point could result in surgery. The Los Angeles Lakers are in serious jeopardy of missing the playoffs, an unthinkable scenario heading into the 2012-2013 season.

New York Knicks

Although the New York Knicks were expected to remain in the middle of the playoff picture with a core of Carmelo Anthony, Tyson Chandler, and J.R. Smith, their current status as the 2^nd seed in East and only 1.5 games back of the Miami Heat comes as a surprise to most. The Knicks decided against matching the Houston Rockets offer for Jeremy Lin in the off-season, and signed point guards Raymond Felton and Jason Kidd to take his spot. The move that has certainly paid dividends thus far, with Jason Kidd’s veteran leadership proving vital to their current success. Ranking 2^nd in the NBA in 3-point field goal percentage, the Knicks have clearly relied on outside shooting, particularly from long-range, which may present problems in the post-season. Amare Stoudemire’s acceptance of a role in the second unit has been a critical part of their continued success, however, as he presents a significant upgrade to the already loaded offensive attack. If the Knicks continue to commit to the defensive end of the floor (they currently rank 8^th in the NBA in points allowed per game at 95.7), expect a deep playoff run from this legit title contender.

And then there were two.

The Baltimore Ravens and the San Francisco 49ers will take the stage Sunday evening in what figures to be an incredibly entertaining finale to the 2012-2013 NFL season. From the ‘Fail Mary’ ending in Seattle, to the spectacular play of young quarterbacks across the league, this historic season will finish in historic fashion, with two brothers coaching against one another with a Super Bowl on the line.

This will mark the first time in NFL history that two brothers will coach against each other in the Super Bowl; John Harbaugh with the Ravens, and Jim Harbaugh with the 49ers. Plenty of nicknames have surfaced as a result, including the ‘Har-Bowl’,‘Super Bro-wl’, and ‘Superbaugh’.

Their teams are strikingly similar, as well. Both have built their identity on a hard-nosed defense led by two of the best middle linebackers in football, Patrick Willis and Ray Lewis. Both look to establish an efficient run game with their lead backs, Frank Gore and Ray Rice. Both have elite defensive lines, with a combined 75 sacks between the two teams. Both have wide receiver corps that rank among the top 10 in the NFL, in large part due to the cannon-arms of their respective quarterbacks. And of course, both are coached by a Harbaugh.

But with so many similarities, this game figures to be decided by the differences between the two teams, most notably at the quarterback position. While both Joe Flacco and Colin Kaepernick are known for their ability to throw the deep ball, it’s the nuances in their game styles that separate the two. Although the sample size is small (Kaepernick will start his 10^th career NFL game on Sunday), he has proven his ability to run the ball effectively, surpassing 200 total rushing yards in his only two playoff starts. With a top ten running back in Frank Gore, opposing defenses have a difficult time preparing for this dynamic San Francisco offense.

On the other side, meet Joe Flacco. In only five seasons as a starting NFL quarterback, Flacco already has eight postseason wins, six of which came on the road. He has certainly earned his reputation as a clutch quarterback, with an opportunity to join Tom Brady as the only two quarterbacks to have nine postseason wins in their first five seasons. As one of the best deep-ball passers in the league, the entire Ravens offense hinges on Flacco’s polarizing quarterback play. When Joe Flacco has a quarterback rating above 100, in both the regular season and postseason, the Ravens are an astounding 32-3. If Flacco can come out and execute early on Sunday evening, the success of the Ravens is sure to follow.

Whether Ray Lewis is able to win a Super Bowl in his final game, or Colin Kaepernick is able to do so in his 10^th game, Sunday should, without a doubt, provide a thrilling ending to a memorable 2012-2013 season.

After 17 weeks of a grueling regular season, followed by two intense playoff rounds, only four teams remain in contention for a shot at the Lombardi trophy.

Let’s begin with the NFC…

San Francisco 49ers at Atlanta Falcons, (3:00PM EST)

The first matchup of the afternoon features the 1 and 2 seeds of the NFC, a clash between Atlanta’s star-studded offense and the 49ers old school defense. Quarterback Matt Ryan led the Falcons to an impressive 13-3 regular season record, going 7-1 at home during that span. With future hall-of-fame tight end Tony Gonzalez alongside two elite receivers in Julio Jones and Roddy White, both of which had over 1000 yards receiving, look for Ryan and company to try and exploit the 49ers tough defense through a heavy passing attack.

Moving the ball against San Francisco has been no easy task, however, as the 49ers enter Sunday’s game as the 3^rd ranked defense in the NFL, allowing just 294.4 total yards per game during the regular season. The 49ers offense has been equally as impressive as their top ranked defense, after an injury to quarterback Alex Smith forced backup Colin Kaepernick into action in week 10. Coach Jim Harbaugh made the difficult decision to promote Kaepernick to the starter permanently, and their success has since followed. Kaepernick, in his first playoff appearance, torched the Green Bay Packers defense with an astounding 181 rushing yards and 263 yards passing, including four total touchdowns. Now he’s got a shot at the Super Bowl.

With San Francisco’s balanced attack facing off against the explosive Atlanta offense, expect nothing short of a thrilling game at the Georgia Dome on Sunday afternoon.

Baltimore Ravens at New England Patriots, (6:30PM EST)

In a rematch of last year’s AFC Championship game, Joe Flacco and the Baltimore Ravens will look to extend Ray Lewis’s final season by one more game. The Ravens are coming off an impressive upset in Denver last Sunday, in large part due to the stellar play of quarterback Joe Flacco. Flacco threw for 331 yards and three touchdowns against a Broncos defense that entered the playoffs allowing 290.8 total yards per game, second best in the NFL.

Flacco’s opponent comes as no surprise, as the Patriots have made the post season nine out of the last ten seasons. Tom Brady and Bill Belichick continue to establish themselves as one of the greatest quarterback-coach combinations in football history, with 2012 proving no exception. The Patriots enter Sunday’s matchup with the number one offense in football, averaging 429.7 yards per game. Tom Brady will be without his pro-bowl tight end, Rob Gronkowski, who re-injured his forearm in their win against Houston. The loss of Gronkowski cannot be understated, as his loss will force the Patriots to completely restructure their passing attack through wide receiver Wes Welker and tight end Aaron Hernandez. The Ravens are fully aware of this, and should be expected to adjust their defensive game plan accordingly.

Tom Brady and Ray Lewis, two of the fiercest competitors of all time at their respective positions, will have their legacies dramatically altered one way or another on Sunday.

Does it get any better?

Although four months of the season were compromised due to the 113-day lockout, both fans and players can exhale a sigh of relief with the terms of the new deal. The agreement reached has a 10-year term, with a mutual opt-out clause after eight years. With the security of at least eight consecutive NHL seasons to come, it appears the word ‘lockout’ can be put to rest for the time being.

But while the players and owners are without a doubt thrilled to resolve the labor dispute, there remains a group even more relieved that an agreement was reached to save the 2013 season. Bar and restaurant owners, concession workers, parking attendants, custodial staffs, and the many other employees that depend on the business of an NHL season were put back to work with the resolution of the lockout.

According to the Detroit News, the city of Detroit lost roughly $1.9 million per cancelled game, a figure that includes the lost revenue at restaurants, bars, hotels, parking garages and other businesses that benefit from large crowds of hockey fans each game night. With the thousands of fans that attend each NHL game across the country, it’s almost impossible to truly measure the collective impact that losing games has on every city.

Thankfully, however, the rest can be left to speculation. The NHL season is under way, which, when it boils down to it, is the only thing the fans ever wanted. Check out our listing of all NHL tickets online.
